Giant Nation,

Our sports seasons are underway and we look forward to supporting all of our teams.  While we return to fans in the stands we wanted to share a few reminders of our expectations for spectators at events at HPHS, as well as when we visit other schools.  

Our expectation is that HPHS athletic events are a family-friendly atmosphere. Some of what takes place at a professional or collegiate sporting event are simply not acceptable behaviors in our eyes at the high school level.

Expectations and Reminders for Spectators at HPHS Athletic Contests

• Remember that you are there to support the student-athletes.
• Remember that young people play sports for their enjoyment.
• Avoid having unrealistic expectations of performance and understand that striving to be one’s best is as important as winning.
• Purchasing a ticket or otherwise obtaining admission to the contest is a privilege to observe the contest, not a license to be reckless in what you say and what you do.
• Learn the rules of the game so that you may understand and appreciate why certain situations take place.
• Understand that spectators exhibiting unruly or unsportsmanlike behavior can be removed from the contest.

Acceptable and Encouraged Behaviors

• Root for your team with chants of praise and/or encouragement in order to uplift the students.
• Respect the official’s decisions and encourage those around you to do the same.
• Respect and show appreciation for the coaches and understand that they have given their time to provide opportunities for our young people.
• Encourage athletes and coaches to play by the rules and to resolve conflicts without resorting to hostility or violence.
• Show respect for the opposing team and realize there would be no game without them.

Unacceptable Behaviors

PLEASE NOTE: These behaviors could lead to an individual being asked to leave the contest.

• Harassing, taunting or ridiculing athletes, coaches, officials, or other spectators.
• Bad language or gestures to mock or intimidate athletes, coaches, officials, or other spectators.
• Getting too close to the playing surface or the benches.  Spectators are expected to be in the bleachers with the exception of entering and leaving the area.

In consideration of Wolters Fields neighbors, Township High School District 113 has agreed to a number of accommodations, listed below, that are in addition to ordinances, laws and regulations that otherwise govern usage of Wolters Field. These accommodations are not binding, and can be modified by District 113 at any time, as circumstances warrant. This summary is posted on the Highland Park High School Athletic Page and will be updated as changes occur.

Summary of the Current Accommodations

1. Warm-up music is only played for 20 minutes before a game.
2. For the majority of games, warm-up music is played using only the west-facing speaker located on the East side of the field. For high attendance games (e.g., football games; playoff games; games against Deerfield High School), additional speakers are used.
3. A limiter has been installed on the Public Address (PA) System to limit the decibel level of sound, regardless of source.
4. In addition, to manage sound levels, different speaker settings are applied based on attendance levels and based on sporting event.
5. Play-by-play announcing is limited to football and any playoff games. For all other events, the PA system (with the sound limiters) is used on a more limited basis (e.g., to announce players and events, scores/goals, to play the National Anthem).
6. At early morning Poms practices, typically on days of football games, any speakers used are placed facing west, away from homes.
7. The District refrains from using loud sounds, such as coaches whistles, prior to the city ordinance time limits (i.e., 7 AM for weekdays; 9 AM weekends and holidays).
8. The District will attempt to decrease the length of the horn when time expires.
9. Athletic Field Drive is only used for football and meeting overflow parking. Maintenance and emergency vehicles may also access Athletic Field Drive, as needed. The District will be gathering data at events in spring of 2017 to assess if this accommodation needs to be revisited.
10. In lieu of use of chemicals, as a dustproofing treatment, Athletic Field Drive is watered prior to any parking usage.
11. Cars are parked on Athletic Field Drive from north to south (per Ordinance 81-13, cars are also parked westerly facing).
12. While there are no parking or driving restrictions on neighborhood streets other than for lighted events, the District communicates to parents and personnel a request to be respectful of neighbors, and to please not use neighborhood streets for parking, drop offs or pick ups.
13. During football games, District 113 pays to employ security staff to monitor and manage parking and drop offs on the neighborhood streets off of Beverly Drive.

We will document the dates we use the lights for twilight events above. When the days are shorter we will need to turn them on more often to complete contests and practices.
